The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, says terrorism levels in Nigeria have significantly declined, estimating the progress of the country’s security efforts at between 65 and 70 percent.
Musa made the statement on Friday during an interview on Arise Television, noting that no country is completely free from crime and insecurity.
He suggested that some criminal activities may be politically driven, aimed at portraying the government as weak or making the country appear ungovernable.
The defence minister also linked parts of the country’s insecurity challenges to a breakdown in family values and poor social orientation. According to him, many individuals involved in kidnapping and other crimes are driven by the desire for quick wealth rather than a commitment to hard work and discipline.
Musa stressed that despite the challenges, the armed forces and other security agencies are actively working to curb insecurity across the country.
He further noted that public cooperation has improved in recent times, which has helped security operations yield better results.
He said security efforts are ongoing and that progress is being made, while acknowledging that some level of criminality still exists, as is the case in every nation.
