The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the federal government has suspended the payment of upkeep allowances for beneficiaries of the student loan scheme.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the agency described the reports as false, misleading, and deliberately designed to create panic, confusion, and mistrust among students and the public.
She clarified that neither the federal government nor NELFUND has issued any directive stopping or suspending upkeep allowance payments under the scheme.
The agency also said the viral content included a fake statement attributed to NELFUND and an AI-generated newspaper front page allegedly linked to The Nigerian Tribune, both of which were not produced by any official or authorised source.
According to the Fund, the materials currently circulating online are fabricated and do not originate from the agency or any legitimate government communication platform.
NELFUND urged students, parents, and stakeholders to disregard the false information and rely only on verified updates from its official channels and recognised media organisations.
It also warned against the spread of unverified reports, noting that such misinformation could cause unnecessary anxiety across the country.
Reaffirming its commitment, the agency stated that it remains focused on expanding access to higher education and supporting Nigerian students through sustainable financing initiatives.
