Nigeria’s Minister-designate for Power, Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has denied reports claiming that he promised to repair the country’s troubled national grid within three months.
Papers News reports that in a statement released on Thursday through his spokesperson, Adeola Adelabu, the Minister described the reports as false and misleading.
According to the statement, Tegbe did not give any fixed deadline for completely fixing the power sector during his screening before the Senate on May 6, 2026.
Instead, he explained that plans for major reforms were still being worked out and would depend on technical findings and consultations with stakeholders in the sector.
The statement explained that Tegbe only informed lawmakers that work aimed at stabilising the national grid would begin within his first 100 days in office.
It added that broader reforms affecting electricity generation, transmission and distribution would require more time before Nigerians begin to see full results.
It also said the minister admitted that issues involving gas supply, metering, sector credibility and operational efficiency could take about one year before visible progress is achieved.
During the Senate screening, Tegbe assured lawmakers that his goal is to improve electricity supply across the country and restore confidence in the sector.
He also promised to work on upgrading power infrastructure, improving commercial operations and ensuring accountability throughout the electricity value chain.
On electricity tariff reforms, the minister said the government would protect vulnerable Nigerians while also trying to maintain affordability, attract investors and keep the sector sustainable.
“I never promised three months on the power grid report, no fixed timeline was given. The reports are misleading. Work on the grid will start in my first 100 days. Nigeria will see improvement in power supply but major reforms will take time. We are still working on the full plan on the electricity sector, electricity problems cannot be fixed overnight”, the statement read in part.
