The Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper and armed robber, and recovered from the suspect one AK-47 rifle and 63 rounds of live ammunition.
This was contained in a statement signed and released by the Police Public Relations Officer for the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Saturday.
The statement noted that “on April 29, 2026, at about 2010 hours, operatives of the CP Special Assignment Team, acting on credible intelligence, arrested one Shehu Malami, aged 45 years, at Ogor Market, Ughelli.
“The suspect later led operatives to his hideout in Agbarha-Otor, where one AK-47 rifle and 63 rounds of live ammunition were recovered.”
According to the police statement, “preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is part of a kidnapping syndicate terrorising Ughelli, Agbarho, Sapele, Warri and other areas in the state.”
The statement, however, said that “efforts to arrest other members of his gang are ongoing.”
In another development, on May 2, 2026, at about 0835 hours, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations), acting on credible intelligence, mobilised and led operatives of the Buffalo, Crack, and Operation Delta Shield squads to a bush near the Customs checkpoint along the Benin–Asaba Expressway.
The PPRO said a search of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, six rounds of live ammunition, and one Beretta pistol.
Investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to arrest the suspects, the police spokesman said.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining the tempo against criminal elements while urging residents to monitor and promptly report suspicious persons or movements in their environment to the police.
The CP assured that the identities of informants “will be treated with utmost confidentiality.”
