The Ogun State Police Command has foiled an attempted truck hijack in the Ijebu-Imushin area of the state, recovering a stolen DAF truck and a locally fabricated rifle allegedly used by the suspects.
The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Abeokuta by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
According to the statement, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday after the police received a distress call from a truck driver transporting motor spare parts.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was attacked by suspected hoodlums around the Oke-Ado area in Ijebu North Local Government Area, where the truck was forcibly taken from him.
Babaseyi explained that detectives and highway patrol officers quickly mobilised to the scene after receiving the report, forcing the suspects to abandon the vehicle and flee.
He said the swift response by the operatives prevented the criminals from escaping with the truck and safeguarded the goods being transported.
The police spokesperson added that the driver suffered a minor injury to his right ankle during the attack and was immediately given first aid treatment.
During a search of the recovered truck, operatives reportedly discovered a wooden-fabricated rifle wrapped in black tape, believed to have been used by the suspects during the operation.
Babaseyi said efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects for prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers involved for their prompt action and professionalism.
He also reassured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, while urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
