Suspected terrorists have attacked a convoy of commuters along the Magami–Dansadau road in Dansadau axis of Zamfara State, killing at least 10 people and abducting an unspecified number of travellers.
The incident occurred on Sunday between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. when armed assailants opened fire on vehicles moving under security escort along the volatile route, which has long been notorious for banditry and kidnappings.
A resident of Magami, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, said the victims had waited several hours for security clearance before the escort eventually arrived. The convoy was later ambushed around Dogosatsin village.
According to him, the attackers targeted the operational vehicle of the security team escorting the commuters, leading to heavy casualties among security personnel, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and civilians.
He said: “The convoy reached Dogosatsin village when the bandits opened fire on the operational vehicle of the security forces, killing security agents, CJTF members and civilians, while several others sustained injuries.”
The source added that 10 bodies had been recovered so far, while search efforts were still ongoing for more victims. Some injured persons were initially treated at Magami General Hospital before being referred to Gusau for further medical attention, though evacuation has been delayed due to lack of security escort.
He also confirmed that several travellers were abducted during the attack as they headed to different communities in the area, noting that troops engaged the attackers and forced them into retreat, reducing further casualties.
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force in Zamfara State, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the attack, saying casualty figures were still being verified.
The Magami–Dansadau route remains one of the most dangerous corridors in Zamfara, with repeated attacks forcing residents to rely heavily on armed escorts for movement. Despite ongoing road construction projects and security interventions in the area, insecurity continues to disrupt travel and daily life along the axis.
