As the world prepares to observe the 2026 edition of the World Day of the Boy Child on May 16, organizers have unveiled the theme, “Boys to Men: Adopting Good Habits and Attitudes,” with a renewed call for stronger support systems for boys and adolescent males globally.
The annual event, also known as International Boys Day, was inaugurated in 2018 and is now celebrated in 41 countries. It serves as a platform to promote the welfare, protection, and development of boys while encouraging conversations around the challenges they face in society.
According to the organizers, many boys today are emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually vulnerable, often pressured by societal expectations that discourage them from expressing pain, disappointment, or emotional struggles. This culture, they noted, has contributed to rising cases of depression, low self-esteem, and emotional suppression among boys and young men.
The 2026 campaign aims to encourage boys to embrace positive habits, healthy attitudes, and responsible behaviour as they transition into manhood. Stakeholders across communities, schools, governments, and organizations are being urged to create safer and more supportive environments for boys.
Founder of the initiative, Jerome Teelucksingh, emphasized the need for collective action to address issues affecting boys, including academic underachievement, discrimination, illiteracy, poverty, depression, suicide, and the lack of positive male role models.
The initiative also advocates for mentorship programmes, improved literacy support, stronger male representation in schools, and direct engagement sessions where boys can openly discuss their concerns with educators, healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers, parents, legislators, and social service providers.
Organizers noted that the day has helped stimulate global dialogue on creating nurturing environments where boys can safely and successfully navigate the journey from boyhood to manhood.
The World Day of the Boy Child is guided by nine core principles, including educating and mentoring boys, rescuing boys from poverty and violence, promoting healthy lifestyles, addressing discrimination, encouraging equality, and maintaining good morals and values.
Future themes announced for the campaign include:
- 2027: “Countering Underachievement: Brilliant Boys are Cool, Literate Boys”
- 2028: “The DRIP Boys: Disciplined, Responsible, Intelligent and Positive”
- 2029: “Healthy Boys Got Healthy Bodies & Healthy Minds”
Organizers called on governments, institutions, families, and communities worldwide to work together in building a better future for boys and adolescent males.
