Osun 2026: Adeleke’s re-election, triumph of people’s democratic will — Afenifere

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has described the outcome of the Osun State governorship election as a triumph of democratic power and the ultimate supremacy of the electorate’s choice.

This followed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s announcement of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner of Saturday’s governorship election.

Afenifere, in a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Sola Ebiseni, on Monday, lauded residents of the state for their high turnout and determination to protect their votes during the election.

The group said the turnout, which pushed Osun above the one million voters’ threshold, demonstrated the people’s commitment to exercising and defending their democratic rights.

“We are proud of them for keeping aloft a culture of defending their political rights for which the Yoruba people are known, not only in Nigeria but also as firmly established in history long before British colonialism.”

Afenifere said the election “passed creditably the test of a free, fair and credible process” and commended INEC for its performance.

The group, however, cautioned that “it cannot be uhuru until our country joins the league of nations where the credibility of the electoral process is beyond anxiety each election season, with all eyes and minds on the 2027 general elections.”

Afenifere also congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election, saying the expectations would be higher as he seeks to justify the confidence reposed in him by the people of the state.
