Vice President Kashim Shettima has chosen to mark his 60th birthday in a low-key manner, directing friends, associates and supporters to refrain from organising public celebrations or publishing congratulatory messages in his honour.
Shettima will clock 60 on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
His position was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha.
According to the statement, the Vice President wants the occasion observed privately, stressing that public attention should remain focused on the country’s affairs rather than his personal milestone.
Shettima specifically appealed to his well-wishers not to organise birthday parties, hold congratulatory gatherings or place goodwill advertisements across newspapers, television, radio and digital platforms.
He instead encouraged those who wish to celebrate him to channel their thoughts and resources towards praying for Nigeria and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
The Vice President said, “To ensure absolute propriety, I respectfully appeal that there should be no public birthday celebrations, congratulatory gatherings or goodwill advertorials across print, broadcast and digital media platforms.”
He explained that the decision was informed by his belief that national issues and the task of development should take precedence over personal celebrations.
The statement added that for Shettima, the milestone should provide an opportunity for “reflection, gratitude and renewed commitment to the service of the country.”
The Vice President also urged Nigerians and his supporters to use the occasion to reflect on the nation’s progress and continue supporting efforts aimed at national development.
