Gridlock: Lagos moves to intensify enforcement efforts along Apapa, Lekki ports
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to intensify its traffic and law enforcement efforts along the Apapa and Lekki Port corridors following recent feedback and an assessment of the traffic situation in the two areas.
The disclosure was made at a strategy meeting headed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, on Tuesday, at the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa.
Giwa disclosed that gaps were identified in the current enforcement process, necessitating a re-jig of the strategy.
He said the ministry would deploy more traffic management personnel to the Lekki Port corridor to strengthen truckers’ compliance with the E-Call-Up system and ensure the seamless movement of articulated trucks in and out of the ports, including Apapa.
The special adviser also assured that the ministry has scheduled the implementation of the improved enforcement strategy, urging officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, to remain committed to the diligent discharge of their duties.
Also, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr Olawale Musa, disclosed that a shift schedule of duty would be deployed for LASTMA officers on both corridors, which will ensure their presence at all times, while those found underperforming will be redeployed immediately.
Musa also warned all operators of illegal parks around the two-port area to comply with the state’s operational guidelines.
The state government, therefore, urged all stakeholders to voluntarily comply with the E-Call-Up system to minimise congestion along the port corridors, adding that subsequent pleas for clemency from violators after enforcement will not be entertained.
In attendance at the strategy meeting are the General Manager, LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, among others.
