Just in: ASUU-UNIZIK calls off strike after members receive full August salaries
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka Branch, has suspended its strike following the full payment of its members’ August 2026 salaries.
The suspension took effect immediately on Friday, September 11, 2026, following a resolution by the branch congress after members withdrew their services on September 7 over the non-payment of their complete August salaries.
In a statement signed by the ASUU branch Chairperson, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, on Friday, the union directed members to resume their academic and administrative responsibilities.
The statement read: “Pursuant to our Congress resolution and notice of September 7, 2026, where members of ASUU-UNIZIK resolved to withdraw their services pending the complete payment of August 2026 salary.
“The Branch Executive is pleased to inform all members that the complete August 2026 salary has now been paid to all members.
“Consequently, and in line with the resolution, the Branch hereby directs the immediate suspension of the strike action with effect from today, Friday, September 11, 2026.
“All members are therefore directed to resume all academic and administrative duties, including teaching, lectures, supervision, marking, committee meetings, submission of results, etc.
“We commend all comrades for your resoluteness, unity, and discipline during this period. Our solidarity and collective action yielded positive result.
“Let us remain vigilant and continue to monitor developments. Official updates will be communicated via our union platforms.
“Once again, thank you for standing firm. Solidarity Forever!”
The union said members’ collective action had produced a positive outcome, while commending them for their unity, discipline and resolve throughout the industrial action.
It also urged members to remain vigilant and monitor developments, adding that further official information would be communicated through its union platforms.
The latest development followed the September 7, 2026, congress resolution activating the ASUU National Executive Council’s “No Pay, No Work” position over the delayed payment of the full August salary.
With the salary arrears now fully settled, ASUU-UNIZIK has directed members to return to their academic and administrative responsibilities.
