Electricity transmission along the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor has been disrupted after strong winds and heavy rainfall caused a major transmission tower to collapse.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident, stating that the collapse affected the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line and led to a disruption in bulk electricity transmission along the corridor.
According to TCN, the affected line, identified as 2KNJ-BRK1, first tripped at about 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026. An attempt to restore the line at approximately 11:07 p.m. was unsuccessful as it tripped again.
Following the second trip, TCN deployed linesmen from its Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region to inspect the transmission corridor and determine the cause of the fault.
The inspection team subsequently discovered that transmission Tower T367 had collapsed.
TCN said preliminary investigations indicated that the tower was brought down by strong winds and heavy rainstorms in the area.
The collapse has affected the movement of bulk electricity through the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor. Consequently, TCN declared force majeure on the affected line, citing the natural weather conditions that caused the damage.
The transmission company said it had commenced arrangements to deploy personnel, equipment and other necessary materials to the affected location to reconstruct the collapsed tower and restore normal electricity transmission.
Despite the incident, TCN said it had maintained electricity supply to Sokoto through an alternative transmission route.
According to the company, the Talata Mafara-Sokoto corridor is currently receiving power from the Kaduna-Mando axis through the 132kV Zaria-Funtua-Gusau transmission line.
TCN explained that the alternative arrangement would help sustain electricity supply to affected areas while efforts are being made to repair and rebuild the damaged transmission infrastructure.
The company apologised to electricity consumers and other stakeholders for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
TCN assured the public that it was working to restore normal bulk electricity transmission along the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor as soon as possible.
