The Frankfurt-based institution announced her decision in a statement on Thursday, saying Lagarde had informed the ECB’s Governing Council and European Council President Antonio Costa of her planned departure.
“European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde today informed the Governing Council and the president of the European Council Antonio Costa that she will step down from her position on 7 February 2027,” the ECB said.
Lagarde’s departure will come ahead of the scheduled end of her term in October 2027.
