“Enough Time To Appoint Successors” — Tinubu Extends NCoS, NIS Chiefs’ Tenures By 18 Months

President Bola Tinubu has approved an 18-month extension of the tenures of the heads of the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service, keeping both officials in office until 2028.
Under the approval, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, will now remain in office until May 26, 2028, while the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, will run until June 30, 2028.
The Presidency announced the extensions on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Tinubu’s decision followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and was intended to address what the Presidency described as a succession gap in both services.
The extension is also expected to give the relevant board sufficient time to complete the process of appointing successors to the two service chiefs.
Tinubu commended Nwakuche and Nandap for reforms undertaken under their leadership and urged them to build on the progress recorded in their respective agencies.
“President Tinubu commended Nwakuche and Nandap for the reforms achieved under their leadership and charged them to consolidate these gains,” the statement said.
Nwakuche was nominated by Tinubu as Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024 and subsequently confirmed by the Senate in March 2025.
Nandap was nominated as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and received Senate confirmation on March 1 of the same year.
With the latest presidential approval, both officials will continue overseeing their respective services while the government prepares for an eventual leadership transition.
The Nigerian Correctional Service is responsible for the custody, reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates, as well as the administration of non-custodial measures, while the Immigration Service oversees migration management, border control and the issuance of travel and immigration documents.
The Presidency said the additional 18 months would provide continuity in the two services while allowing sufficient time for their leadership succession arrangements to be concluded.
