Gridlock Looms As Lagos Diverts Traffic For Independence Bridge Repairs

Motorists plying Independence Bridge on Lagos Island may experience traffic congestion as the Lagos State Government announces a diversion of traffic for repair works scheduled to begin on Friday.

The state government said the Federal Ministry of Works would commence asphalt repairs on the bridge on Friday, at night, with work continuing throughout Saturday and Sunday.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a traffic advisory.

According to the advisory, the repair works will affect both the inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge, with traffic management measures introduced to minimise disruptions.

The government said each section of the bridge would be partially closed at a time, leaving one lane open for motorists to access their destinations throughout the repair period.

The works are expected to continue during the day and night on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026.

The government urged motorists to plan their journeys, consider alternative routes and cooperate with traffic management officials to reduce delays.

“Traffic management plans to help motorists navigate their movement during the repair works on the inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge include partial closure of each section at a time with a lane opened for motorists to access their destinations,” the statement said.

“Motorists are urged to plan their movement and make use of alternative routes to connect their desired destinations for the duration of the repairs.”

Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be deployed to manage vehicle movement and minimise inconvenience to road users.

Motorists were also advised to remain patient and comply with traffic regulations throughout the repair period.

The latest announcement comes about 18 months after the Federal Government ordered the reopening of the bridge following its closure for maintenance and rehabilitation works in April 2025.

The closure, which lasted for few days, caused severe traffic congestion, leaving some motorists stranded for more than four hours.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, later directed that the bridge be reopened, saying further repairs would be carried out later. He also said palliative works were underway to ensure the bridge remained motorable.

The upcoming repairs are expected to test traffic management on Lagos Island, particularly as motorists navigate the partial closures of the bridge over the three-day period.
