2027: Police Threaten Arrest, Prosecution Over Campaign Billboards Destruction

The Nigeria Police Force has threatened to arrest and prosecute politicians, political thugs and their sponsors involved in the destruction of campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning comes amid growing reports of political supporters tearing down, defacing and destroying campaign materials belonging to opposing candidates in different parts of the country as political activities intensify ahead of the elections.
The Force described the development as an act of political intolerance, warning that it would not allow political disagreements to degenerate into violence, intimidation and criminal activities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the police condemned the destruction of campaign materials and directed those involved to desist immediately or face the consequences of their actions.
The Force explained that the unlawful destruction or removal of campaign materials belonging to other candidates could constitute malicious damage, a criminal offence under the applicable laws.
It specifically cited Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law, which provide for offences relating to mischief.
“Political differences or loyalty to a particular party do not give anyone the right to destroy another candidate’s property or infringe on their right to campaign freely,” the statement said.
The police stressed that all political parties and candidates, irrespective of their affiliations, political influence or status, were entitled to equal protection under the law.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, was said to have directed commissioners of police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take preventive measures, investigate reported incidents and ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
The Force also warned that political sponsors and individuals who recruit, encourage or facilitate the destruction of campaign materials would not escape accountability where evidence establishes their involvement.
“The Nigeria Police Force will not allow political thugs and troublemakers to turn the nation’s political environment into a theatre of lawlessness. Those who choose to break the law will face the full consequences of their actions,” the statement added.
The police urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to embrace peaceful political engagement and respect the rights of opposing candidates to campaign freely.
It warned that political intolerance, intimidation and destruction of campaign materials could undermine democratic participation and threaten the peaceful conduct of the 2027 general elections.
