Police Bow To Pressure, Release Osun Student Over Alleged Assault

The Nigeria Police Force has released a student arrested following an alleged assault by operatives of its Cybercrime Unit in Ede, Osun State, after the incident sparked public outrage.
The student was released on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, following the intervention of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11, Bassey Ewah.
The release came after Ewah held an interactive meeting with representatives of the student body and the affected suspects over the incident, which reportedly involved officers attached to the Zone 11 Cybercrime Unit.
The police intervention followed the circulation of a viral video showing the alleged assault, raising concerns over the conduct of the officers and the treatment of students by security personnel.
During the meeting, Ewah assured the students that the police would conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to establish what transpired and determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
He also stressed the need for accountability and professionalism among police personnel, particularly in the discharge of their duties.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Ojedele Olanrewaju Tunji, the AIG assured the public that the findings of the investigation would be made public upon its conclusion.
The police chief urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, adding that appropriate measures were being taken to address the incident and ensure justice.
