The Zamfara State House of Assembly has suspended two local government chairmen for alleged financial misappropriation, in a move officials say aims to enhance accountability and transparency in the state.
The suspended officials are Mannir Mu’azu Haidara of Kaura Namoda LGA and Umar A. Faru of Bukkuyum LGA.
Their suspension follows a report from the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, presented during Wednesday’s plenary by Deputy Speaker Adamu Aliyu Gumm, who also serves as the committee’s vice chairman.
According to the Assembly spokesperson, Bello Kurya, the lawmakers unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendations under the leadership of Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki.
Kurya explained that the suspension was due to the chairmen’s failure to respond to committee invitations seeking clarification on council fund expenditures. “The invitations were issued to enable them to provide explanations regarding the expenditure of funds,” he said, noting that their refusal constituted a serious breach of legislative oversight.
The suspension takes immediate effect and will remain until the ongoing investigation into the financial activities of Zamfara’s 14 local government councils for the 2025 fiscal year is concluded. The affected chairmen have been directed to hand over to their vice chairmen without delay.
Kurya added that the disciplinary action reflects concerns about transparency, accountability, and respect for the legislative institution. The Assembly has forwarded its resolutions to the state executive for implementation, reaffirming its commitment to good governance and prudent resource management.
