The Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce (NSACC) has called for calm, dialogue and stronger bilateral cooperation amid recent xenophobic unrest in parts of South Africa.
The Chairman of the chamber, Dr Ije Jidenma, made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.
Jidenma expressed concern over the unrest, noting that the situation had affected communities, businesses and livelihoods.
She said the chamber was particularly concerned about the impact of the unrest on Nigerians and other African nationals living in South Africa.
According to her, the development could also affect South African businesses and the broader investment climate.
“As an organisation committed to fostering strong economic and cultural ties between Nigeria and South Africa, we emphasise that moments like this call for restraint and constructive engagements,” she said.
“Both nations share long-standing relationships built on mutual respect, cooperation, trade and a shared vision for African prosperity.
“These values must remain at the forefront during periods of tension such as this.”
Jidenma urged governments, community leaders, civil society organisations and citizens to prioritise peaceful dialogue and uphold the rule of law.
She said ensuring the safety and protection of all residents, irrespective of nationality, was necessary to maintain trust and stability.
The NSACC chairman also called for continued collaboration between Nigerian and South African authorities to address the root causes of the unrest, prevent escalation and strengthen conflict-resolution mechanisms.
The Federal Government has already taken steps to address the situation, including diplomatic engagements, investigations, legislative actions and voluntary evacuations.
Jidenma said the chamber remained committed to supporting efforts aimed at strengthening unity and economic cooperation between both countries.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected. We remain committed to working alongside our partners to promote unity, economic resilience and renewed focus on the shared opportunities that bind our two nations,” she said.
