The Nigerian Army has reported an attempted cyberattack on its official X account after unauthorised posts promoting memecoins appeared on the platform.
The suspicious posts were reportedly published on the military’s official handle at about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, prompting concerns among followers and other users.
The Army said it quickly activated emergency security measures to prevent further unauthorised access and regain full control of the account.
In a statement, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, confirmed that the military had detected an attempt to compromise the account.
“The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account,” Anele said in a statement shared through the Army’s Facebook page.
According to her, technical and protective measures had been deployed to contain the incident, secure the account and protect the integrity of information shared through the platform.
The Army subsequently advised members of the public and the media to disregard suspicious information published through the affected account until the security breach is fully resolved.
Anele assured stakeholders that efforts were ongoing to restore exclusive administrative control of the platform.
“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” she said.
The development comes about two weeks after the Defence Headquarters disclosed that its official X account had also been compromised, raising fresh concerns about the cybersecurity of Nigeria’s military social media platforms.
