Fire Claims One, Destroys N800m Property In Nasarawa

Fire incidents destroyed property worth N800 million in Nasarawa State between January and November 2026, while one person died and eight others were rescued, the Federal Fire Service has said.
The service also disclosed that property valued at N1.3 billion was saved from destruction during the period, following about 97 emergency calls received across the state.
The Nasarawa State Controller of the FFS, Commander of Fire Eno Kelechi Nwachukwu, disclosed the figures on Monday during the flag-off of the 2026 National Fire Week Awareness Campaign at the Federal Secretariat in Lafia.
Nwachukwu said the service remained committed to rapid emergency response but urged residents, business owners and market associations to prioritise fire prevention and promptly report emergencies.
“Fire safety is not the responsibility of the Federal Fire Service alone. It is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of government, private organisations, institutions, families, community leaders and every individual,” she said.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s campaign, “Building a Fire Resilient Nigeria: One Community at a Time,” she called for a shift from responding to fire outbreaks to preventing them through community participation and public awareness.
She described a fire-resilient society as one where families, schools, businesses and industries have the knowledge, capacity and facilities to prevent fires, respond effectively and recover quickly from emergencies.
The fire service chief warned that fire disasters could affect government offices, private homes, markets and places of worship, stressing the need for residents to observe safety precautions.
She added that the service would intensify public education on common fire hazards in homes and commercial premises to reduce incidents and protect lives and property.
